My First Shawl for the Ministry

While I made a Seaman's Scarf and Hat for last year's Christmas at Sea program, the Shaded Triangles Wrap made of Lion Brand Homespun is my first shawl . Knit entirely in garter stitch, it had enough shaping (picking up a new triangle along the side of the current one) to keep me from being bored. I also made it five triangles long, instead of seven and used the balance of the yarn to crochet a broad border of single and double crochet. This broadened the shawl, with the added width providing a more balanced look and also gave it a nice finish. The shade is "Waterfall" and made me think of the Monet poster from an exhibition at the Met.

Tightly Knit

Our group meets twice a month at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bayonne NJ. Originally a "prayer shawl" ministry, we have made shawls and lap rugs for those in need. We offer our prayers along with the work of our hands to comfort those in need of solace.

Our meetings are from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the first and third Saturday of each month. Because of the July 4th holiday, we will only have one meeting in July 2009 -- the third Saturday (7/18/09).

One of our most recently completed projects (6/20/09) is shown above. The shawl was crocheted by Betty.

We also support other charity efforts last. Last year we made several scarves and hats for the Christmas at Sea Program of the Seamen's Church Institute. We also contributed a number of afghans to the patients at the dialysis center in Bayonne.

We welcome new members and are happy to help others learn to knit and crochet or to improve their skills. We'll update this blog before and after each meeting....be sure to check back. Well also be adding other photos of our projects between meetings -- feel free to add a comment!
